The next Greek wine revolution, Kir-Yianni
The newest addition to the Kir-Yianni portfolio and made entirely from the Xinomavro grape. Bright salmon-pink with bright fresh strawberry/wild berry notes on the nose, it sports a creamy mouthfeel with just a bare hint of sweetness. The finish is crisp and refreshing.

The next Greek wine revolution, Kir-Yianni
Stellios Boutari notes that the Xinomavro is Kir-Yianni’s “signature grape” and that it is similar in some ways to the Italian Nebbiolo variety due to its tannin/acid structure. Indeed, this sample showed ripe, sweet black cherry compote, kirsch, black olive, red liquorice and a touch of violet on the nose. Dry with dusty plum, some smoky overtones and a hint of leather, it is still quite young with high tannin and acidity. A bit rough on its own but an absolutely perfect match with Estiatorio Volos’ Lamb Sausage with Wild Mushroom and Thyme Jus.

A Xinomavro/Syrah/Merlot blend and the first wine Stellios himself crafted. “I’m not a winemaker; I’m a mathematician!” He admitted. Well, maybe we need more mathematicians as winemakers. Intense, forward aromas of smoke, black raspberry, tar and wet slate follow through in the mouth with a big, meaty, solid core of black fruit buttressed by characteristically muscular tannins and acidity.

Καινούρια ετικέτα από το Κτήμα Κυρ-Γιάννη, από αμπελώνες φυτεμένους με παλιά κλήματα. Κρασί με αρωματική τυπικότητα και στόμα με καλή οξύτητα και μαλακές τανίνες, που του χαρίζουν πληθωρικότητα. Μπορεί να παλαιωθεί για πέντε με οκτώ χρόνια και ταιριάζει πολύ καλά με κρεατικά, πιάτα με κόκκινες σάλτσες, εδέσματα που έχουν ως βάση τα μανιτάρια και με πιπεράτα τυριά.

Στον αντίποδα των "ήσυχων" ροζέ Ακακιών έρχεται αυτό το "ανήσυχο" αφρώδες με τις ζωηρές φυσαλίδες, που αποκτώνται κατά τη διάρκεια της δεύτερης ζύμωσής του μέσα στην ερμητικά κλεισμένη φιάλη του. Είναι ένα κρασί με κερασένιο χρώμα και ντελικάτα αρώματα φραγκοστάφυλλου, καραμέλας βύσσινο και τριαντάφυλλου. Στόμα παιχνιδιάρικο, με τονισμένη οξύτητα, έντονο φρούτο, γευστικό πλούτο και τρυφερή γλυκύτητα. Ιδανικό για να συνοδεύσει εξωτικά πιάτα , μεσογειακές γεύσεις και φρέσκα ψάρια.

Diaporos Vin de Pays d’Imathia 2008, Kir-Yianni
Il Diaporos Vin de Pays d’Imathia è una delle migliori espressioni greche del vitigno Xinomavro: la vendemmia 2008 si presenta di colore rosso cupo, molto fitto con riflessi quasi bluastri, molto consistente nel calice. Generoso al naso, propone intense e complesse sfaccettature aromatiche di frutta nera matura, prugna, sigaro, cioccolato, tabacco biondo, pepe, cannella e cuoio. L’assaggio è coinvolgente, rivela da subito un’imponente struttura e una trama tannica matura e ben lavorata; da un denso strato di frutta matura emergono scintille di freschezza e sapidità, equilibrato e persistente; un vino maturo e già godibile a pieno, dimostra comunque buone possibilità di invecchiamento.
Ottimo, tipico, generoso, da provare con un gustoso e succulento filetto al pepe.

Naoussa, the Piemont of Greece
Yiannis Boutaris helped a lot to the revival of the Naoussa Appellation and create the first Estate vineyard in Yianakohori in the late 1960’s. In 1996 he left Boutari Company to his brother, Konstantinos Boutaris, keeping the vineyards of Yianakohori and Amyndeon, to establish his new company, Ktima Kir Yianni.
A really deep cherry colour with violet and tawny rime, intense aroma of red fruits, ripe plums, spices and black olives. On the palate is powerful, high in alcohol sensation and in acidity, very robust. With this wine we suffered an attack of hungriness and said that we would accompany it with a roasted lamb and rosemary.

Naoussa, the Piemont of Greece
The unique rosé wine of the tasting and the unique Greek PDO rosé. Lets remember that Amydeon is the coldest part of Greece, and so far the only actual PDO where a rosé can be elaborated with Xinomavro and be inside the appellation. Vineyards from sandy soils and 700meters of altitude.
It has an intense and attractive deep ruby colour and aromas of red fruits like wild strawberries, some black olives notes, and even a lime peel touch. A really refreshing medium-high acidity, medium body and dry finish. A wonderful start of the tasting.

Wines of the week: May 19, 2012
More of a modern interpretation [of Xinomavro], with a little more oak, a little more fruit, and a little less of the tomato/herbal thing. But the freshness is there, the tannins as well. Great introduction to the grape. Serve at 18C. Drink now-2016. Food pairing ideas: Lamb with herbs and mustard.
